The mesosiderites belong to the group of stone-iron meteorites . They consist of a disordered structure of nickel - iron and brecciated silicates , which in turn are composed of pyroxene , plagioclase and olivine .

The presence of breccias suggests a major impact event . The mesosiderites may have formed when two large differentiated asteroids collided. Spectroscopic studies indicate that one of the asteroids could be Vesta , as this celestial body has a large impact crater.
