Charles City is located in northeast Iowa on the Cedar River , which is part of the Mississippi River basin across the Iowa River . The border with Minnesota runs around 50 km north, while the Mississippi forms the border between Iowa and Wisconsin around 130 km east .

The US Highway 18 leading west to east direction through the urban area of Charles City and meet in the center at the northern end of the Iowa State Highway 14 . All other roads are subordinate country roads, some unpaved roads and inner-city connecting roads.
Two railway lines of the Canadian National Railway (CN) and the Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) meet in Charles City .

Winnebago Indians originally settled in the Charles City area . In 1852, 25 families came here as the first settlers . The present city was incorporated as Charlestown in 1869 .
