The Black Hawk Bridge spans the Mississippi River and connects the city of Lansing in Allamakee County in Iowa with the agricultural Crawford County in Wisconsin . It is Iowa's northernmost bridge over the Mississippi River.

The bridge is to Black Hawk , a chief of the Sauk and Fox - Indians named. The Iowa Highway 9 and the Wisconsin Highway 82 cross the Black Hawk Bridge, also known as the "Lansing Bridge" .

In 1929 construction began on the riveted steel truss bridge , and in 1931 it was completed. The designer was Melvin B. Stone , the steel parts were supplied by the McClintic-Marshall Company in Chicago , the steel came from the Inland Steel Company .

Black Hawk Bridge, Lansing, Iowa

The bridge approach in Wisconsin leads over swampy terrain with many tributaries and oxbow lakes of the river before the actual bridge is reached. The fairway is on the Iowa side. The approach in Iowa is relatively abrupt from a city street in Lansing via a steep ramp up onto the bridge.

The bridge, originally built by the private Iowa-Wisconsin Bridge Company , was closed from 1945 to 1957 due to ice damage. The Iowa and Wisconsin governments then purchased and repaired the bridge.

The bridge is only 39.9% usable, but neither Iowa nor Wisconsin have considered upgrading the structure. The traffic volume does not justify a new river crossing for economic reasons. But if the bridge were demolished or closed, there would be a 101 km long gap between the closest bridges.

The 1999 film A True Story shows a scene in which actor Richard Farnsworth drives a lawn tractor over the bridge.
