Malu Mare is a municipality in Dolj County in the Lesser Wallachia Region in Romania . The place with about 3500 inhabitants consists of the villages Malu Mare and Preajba .

location

The municipality is located 6 kilometers southeast of Craiova on the national road ( drum național ) DN 55. The river Jiu crosses the municipality in a south-westerly direction. The places are surrounded by a fertile plain, which is characterized by cornfields and cattle pastures.

history

Malu Mare is a typical example of a Romanian satellite town in the hinterland of Little Wallachia. For a long time the village was very rural, as agriculture could be carried out on a large scale on the fertile soil. At that time the community consisted of only a few farms, but the enormous urban growth of Craiova under the communist regime of the country as well as the measures to relocate the population have caused the population of Malu Mare to increase significantly. Even today, Malu Mare is a popular place to live for wealthier citizens from Craiova, who prefer to live in the rural suburbs of the big city.

In 2004, today's neighboring community Ghindeni was spun off from Malu Mare.

Malu Mare is also a well-known place where relics from the Hallstatt period were found .

economy

There are a number of different industries in Malu Mare. In addition to traditional woodworking, agriculture and animal husbandry, there are also modern services such as retail trade, storage and road construction.

tourism

The most famous building in the municipality is the Church of Preajba . To the east of the place are several small lakes that are suitable for swimming. Craiova residents, in particular, visit the rural community to relax on the weekend.
