Baia de Arieș (outdated Ofenbaia or Baia ; German Offenburg , Hungarian Aranosbánya ) is a town in the Alba district in Romania with 5061 inhabitants (1992). It is located on the Arieș - a right tributary of the Mureș ( Mieresch ) - which is also called the Gold River due to its high mineral content (including gold).
The place is also known by the German names Umberg , Onimberg , Schwendburg , Schwend and Schlossburg and the Hungarian Offenbánya and Kupecbánya .
history
Baia de Arieș was first mentioned in a document from Charles I of Hungary in 1325 . At the beginning of the 15th century, the place received city rights, but lost them again later. The city remained in Hungarian possession until 1920, when it was given to Romania by the Treaty of Trianon, along with all of Transylvania . It was not until 1998 that Baia received city status again.
economy
Until 2004 the place was the center of metal , arsenic and pyrite mining , which was also known for its gold deposits . The first Transylvanian Saxons found gold in the mountains and in the Arieș river. When the mineral resources were exhausted, the mine was closed.
