Sanguszko is the name of a Polish noble family of Lithuanian origin. The feminine form of the name is Sanguszko (wa) .

history

The Sanguszkos come from the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania . The progenitor of the Sanguszko dynasty is the son of Prince Fiodor and grandson of Grand Duke Algirdas , Prince Sanguszko Fedkowicz († after 1454), from whose first name the name of the dynasty is derived. The Sanguszkos were closely related to the royal and grand ducal dynasty of the Jagiellonians , whose ancestral father was Grand Duke Gediminas . In the feminine line they are related to the house of the Rurik .

The original territory of the Sanguszkos was Volhynia in what is now Ukraine , where they had considerable assets, which over time were expanded to include lands and cities in Podolia and Lesser Poland . At the turn of the Middle Ages to the modern age , the Sanguszko house was divided into two lines:

  • The Koszyrski line (Sanguszko-Koszyrski house), founded by Prince Michał († around 1491), died out with Prince Adam Aleksander Sanguszko († 1653) in the male line.
  • The Kowelski line (Sanguszko-Kowelski house), founded by Prince Aleksander († around 1511), named after Kowel , still exists today, currently the only bearer of the name is Prince Paul (* 1973), who lives in São Paulo.

The respective Prince Sanguszko held a hereditary seat in the manor house of the Austrian Empire .
