David Janowitsch Tscherkassky ( Russian Давид Янович Черкасский Dawid Janowitsch Cherkassky , Ukrainian Давид Янович Черкаський Davyd Janowytsch Tscherkaskyj * 23. August 1932 in Shpola , Ukrainian SSR , Soviet Union ; † thirtieth October 2018 in Kiev , Ukraine ) was a Ukrainian-Soviet animator , Director and screenwriter . He was a People's Artist of Ukraine (2010).

biography

David Cherkassky was born in the city of Shpola in Ukraine . His father was a representative of the Ukrainian People's Commissar of Justice. David graduated from the Kiev Institute of Construction and Engineering and worked in this industry for a while.

Since he was a child, Cherkassky wanted to get into animation. In 1959 he came to the Ukrainian animation studio Kiewnautschfilm , where he made his debut as a director in 1964 . Other animated films followed, which achieved cult status in the Soviet Union: the series " The Adventures of Captain Wrungel " (1979, based on the book by Andrei Nekrasov), " Doctor Ajbolit " (1985, based on the poems of Kornei Tschukowski ) and the two- parter " Treasure Island " (1988).

style

In his films, Tscherkassky used tricks that largely did not exist in Soviet animated films.

He combined animation and real shots in the picture: from the real sea, over which the heroes of the "Adventures of Captain Wrungel" sail, to real people who are combined with drawn characters in "Treasure Island". He managed three-dimensional flights to simulate pans from the real film to show how the camera flies around the characters - long before such tricks with the help of CGI technology became common. In his films, noises were drawn onomatopoeically as part of the picture (such as "Boom!", "Bang!") Etc. According to the director, Captain Wrungel was the first cartoon series in the Soviet Union.
