The Motzfeldt I cabinet was the first government in Greenland . It was formed with the introduction of the Hjemmestyre in 1979 after the first election to Inatsisartut . So far Greenland has been ruled from Denmark and only had the National Council as a parliament-like body with limited power-political means.
Emergence
After the Inatsisartut election at the end of April 1979, parliament consisted only of members of the Siumut and Atassut . Sulisartut Partiiat and Inuit Ataqatigiit had missed parliamentary entry due to the majority voting system . With 13 elected members, the Siumut provided the majority of the 21 members of parliament, so that no coalition negotiations had to be started. In early May, the party announced the five ministers elected. On May 7th, 13 MPs voted to appoint ministers under Prime Minister Jonathan Motzfeldt .
