Thue Christiansen

Nikolaj Thue Søren Hans Christiansen (born February 25, 1940 in Maamorilik ) is a Greenlandic artist , politician ( Siumut ), teacher , editor and translator .

Life

Thue Christiansen is the son of telegraph operator Hans Peter Sivert Kristian Kristiansen (1913–1967) and his wife Marie Ane Sofie Kathrine Lynge (1913–?). He himself married the Danish nurse Katrin Sólrun Jensen (* 1942), daughter of Jens Martin Jensen and Nikoline Rubeksen, on December 26, 1965.

He was born in the Maamorilik mining settlement and went to school in Maniitsoq . In 1959 he finished secondary school in Nuuk and then attended the college in Støvring for a year and then the teachers' college in Haderslev , which he graduated in 1964. From 1964 to 1967 he worked as a teacher in Vojens , then returned to Greenland, where he worked in Maniitsoq until 1970. From 1970 to 1973 he was vice school inspector in Qasigiannguit , then spent a year at Danmarks Lærerhøjskole and worked in Kangaamiut from 1974 to 1977 . Then he was vice school inspector in Maniitsoq for two years.

From 1971 to 1973 he was vice-chairman of the Qasigiannguit Parish Council . From 1977 to 1981 Thue Christiansen was part of the party administration of the still young Siumut . In 1979 he was elected to the first Inatsisartut and appointed Minister of Culture and Education in the first Naalakkersuisut , the Motzfeldt I cabinet.

In 1983 he was employed at the Government Information Office (Tusarliivik) and in 1986 he was appointed Government Art Advisor. From 1989 to 1990 he was provisional vice director of the cultural directorate and then cultural advisor for five years. In 1995 he became office manager. From 1998 to 2000 he was a handicraft development consultant.

Thue Christiansen was editor of the Greenlandic local newspapers Qaqqarsuaq , Nipe , Maniitsup Aviisia and Kangaamiormioq . But he is mainly known as an artist. In 1984 he won the competition for the Greenlandic flag , so that today his design forms the flag of the country. In addition, he mainly made reliefs and watercolors , but was also an illustrator and caricaturist . He also designed numerous stamps and company logos, including that of KNI . His works have been exhibited in Greenland, Denmark , the Netherlands and Canada . He also translated John Steinbeck's novel Tortilla Flat from Danish into Greenlandic.

On June 21, 1991 he received the Nersornaat in gold. In 2002 he was awarded the Greenland Culture Prize.
