KNI A / S is a state-owned Greenlandic wholesale , retail and supply company based in Sisimiut . KNI stands for Kalaallit Niuerfiat.
history
KNI is the successor company of Den Kongelige Grønlandske Handel (KGH), which was founded in 1774 to handle the trade and administration of the Danish colony at the time. In 1950 the Danish state lost its trade monopoly over Greenland in the form of the KGH and in 1986 the company was placed under the Greenland government and converted into Kalaallit Niuerfiat. In 1993 the company was split up into several individual companies and converted into the KNI conglomerate. In 1997 these were again united under one umbrella company, with other parts being made independent, for example the Royal Arctic Line , which has not been part of KNI since then.
