Daniel Skifte

Daniel Skifte (born February 1, 1936 in Maniitsoq ; † March 4, 2020 in Vejle ) was a Greenlandic politician ( Atassut ), teacher and skier .

Life

Daniel Skifte was the youngest son of Daniel Iver Saul Skifte (1880-1935) and his second wife Sofia Rakel Karen Lyberth (1898-1964). He was born after his father's death. He himself had three children with Inge Nissen Hagensen from Denmark. He attended Efterskole from 1950 to 1952 and finished secondary school in 1956 . He then graduated from a teacher training college in 1961 and became a teacher in Lyngby-Tårbæk municipality . In 1965 he trained at Danmarks Højskole for Legemsøvelser and was finally a teacher in Nuuk from 1966 to 1971 . Until 1975 he was the hall inspector of Godthåbhallen and then until 1982 first vice and then first school inspector in Nuuk. Until 1995 he worked as a school director .

He was also the founder of the first Greenlandic ski club Nuummi Sisorartartut Peqatigiit (NSP), from 1969 to 1973 chairman of Grønlands Idrætsforbund and co-founder of numerous other sports associations. At the time he was considered the best skier in the country.

In 1975 he took part for the first time as second deputy for Lars Chemnitz in an election for Grønlands Landsråd . In 1979 he was a candidate in the first election for Inatsisartut , but with 152 votes he only achieved the fourth-most of his party in his constituency behind Lars Chemnitz, Niels Carlo Heilmann and Anguteeraq Davidsen . In the same year he was also a representative of Otto Steenholdt in the Folketing election . In the parliamentary elections in 1983 he took part again as Lars Chemnitz 'deputy. In 1984 he was also Chemnitz's representative in the Folketing election. In the Inatsisartut election of the same year he again represented Otto Steenholdt. In 1994 he was elected party leader of the Atassut without having sat in parliament once. In the same year he took part in the general election and received the fourth most votes of his party in his constituency and thus won a seat. He was also appointed Minister for Housing and Economics. In 1999 he was re-elected. In 2001 he was appointed President of Parliament and was replaced in 2002 when he left Parliament while he was also giving up his party chairmanship.

On January 31, 2006 he received the Nersornaat in silver and on July 5, 2015 the gold. Daniel Skifte died on March 4, 2020 at the age of 84 in Vejle, Denmark .
