Eyðgunn Samuelsen

Eyðgunn Jana Samuelsen (born May 23, 1959 in Sørvágur ) is a Faroese social scientist and social democratic politician . Since 2008 she has been a member of Løgting, Faroese . She has been Minister for Social Affairs in the Faroese state government since mid-September 2015 .

Education and career

She graduated from school in 1978 at Føroya Studentaskúli og HF-skeið in Hoydalar . In 1982 she began studying social sciences and history at the RUC in Roskilde . In 1984 she moved to Klaksvík . Among other things, she was a board member of the housewives' association there in 1985. In 1987 she worked as a teacher at the technical school in Klaksvík. From 1987 to 1992 she continued her studies in social sciences and history at the RUC, graduating as cand. Mag. from.

In 1988 she became a member of the social democratic Javnaðarflokkurin .

From 1990 to 1992 she was part of the management of the hospital in Klaksvík. From 1992 to 1996 she was a member of a tax assessment committee (Líkningarráð Føroya). From 1994 to 2000 she headed a department for higher technical education. In 1996 she was elected to the local council of Klaksvík, sat there from 1996 to 2000 in the opposition and was re-elected to the local council in 2000. As part of the coalition majority, she headed the Social Committee. From August 2000 to August 2003 she was head of department for vocational schools and upper secondary schools in the Ministry of Culture. From 2003 she was the department head for higher technical education at the Technical School in Klaksvík.

In February 2008 she came to Løgting to represent Helena Dam á Neystabø . In February 2011 she took over the chairmanship of the Javnaðarflokkurin. In the elections for Løgting at the end of October 2011, she was elected to parliament for the first time as a social democratic member and received 261 personal votes . For the next four years she was a member of the finance committee, where she also temporarily chaired, and was a representative member of the culture and justice committees.

The deputy party leader announced her renewed candidacy for the Løgting in 2015. In the election on September 1, 2015, she achieved the third-best result within her party with 433 personal votes.

In mid-September 2015 she was appointed Minister of Social Affairs in the newly formed Faroese state government under Prime Minister Aksel V. Johannesen .

Eyðgunn Samuelsen is the daughter of Ann and Anton Henriksen from Sørvágur . Eyðgunn is married to Jóan Hendrik Svabo Samuelsen and the couple have two children. The family lives in Klaksvík.
