Richmond County is one of the currently 18 counties in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia (Nova Scotia). It is located in the east of the province, on Cape Breton Island, and borders the Cape Breton Regional Municipality to the east and Inverness County to the north . To the west, separated by the Strait of Canso , it is bordered by Guysborough County . The county is on the Atlantic Ocean and has its administrative center in Arichat . Bras d'Or Lake is located in the north of the county and in the center of the island .
In the 1,244.24 km² administrative unit lived 9,293 inhabitants in 2011, which results in a population density of 7.5 inhabitants / km². Compared to the census from 2006, the number of inhabitants has decreased again. The population has recently decreased by 4.6% and is continuing the long-lasting downward trend. The county ranks in the middle of all counties in terms of population density, but is the smallest of all counties in the province.
The county is connected to the rest of the provincial road network via Nova Scotia Highway 104 .
history
Even before it was discovered by Europeans, this area was a settlement and hunting area for First Nations , the Mi'kmaq . The county was founded in 1835 and named after the 4th Duke of Richmond ( Governor General of Upper Canada from 1818 to 1819 ).
Communities
The county is divided into various small and micro communities. The largest parish is St. Peter's. There is also a Mi'kmaq reservation in the county.
