from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Citizens' Movement (Isl. Borgarahreyfingin ) was a party in Iceland . It was created in 2009 under the impact of the financial crisis . In the 2009 parliamentary election , the party was able to win 7.2 percent and thus four of 63 seats in the Icelandic parliament Althing .

A prominent member of the party was the filmmaker Þráinn Bertelsson . He resigned from the party on August 14, 2009 and became non-attached. On September 18, 2009, the three remaining MPs Birgitta Jónsdóttir , Margrét Tryggvadóttir and Þór Saari founded a new group under the name Hreyfingin ("The Movement"). This meant that the citizens' movement was no longer represented in parliament. On March 18, 2012, the new party Dögun ("Dawn") emerged from the three parties of the Citizens' Movement, Hreyfingin and the Liberal Party of Iceland .
