Andrej Šiško (born April 24, 1969 in Koper ) is a Slovenian right-wing extremist politician and activist .

Life

Andrej Šiško was born in Koper in what was then communist Yugoslavia . His family soon moved to Maribor , where he attended elementary school and a school for gastronomy and tourism. In 2011 he completed a degree in information technology . While still at school he founded various illegal anti-communist and separatist organizations. He was first imprisoned during his time in the Yugoslav People's Army after a dispute with a superior.

During the Slovenian War of Independence in 1991, he founded a volunteer unit that cooperated with the Slovenian Territorial Defense. He took part in the capture of the tanks that would later form the first Slovenian armored units.

In 1992, Šiško was imprisoned on suspicion of attempted murder. He was accused of placing a bomb on a car with Zmago Jelinčič as his assistant. In 2006 he was arrested again for this and sentenced to two years in prison. In an appeal process, the sentence was reduced to 22 months. Jelinčič, however, was acquitted.

Šiško was the leader of the ultras group Viole , which supports the football club NK Maribor .

Since around 2004 he has also been involved in the Hervardi group , which represents a Venetian descent of the Slovenes and which openly sympathizes with right-wing extremist ideas. Until a few years ago, the group warned against the Balkanization of Slovenia, now they see immigration as the greatest danger.

Political commitment

In the presidential election in Slovenia 2017 , Šiško ran unsuccessfully for the Gibanje zedinjena Slovenija (German Movement for a United Slovenia ), founded in 2014 , but only achieved 2.2% of the votes.

Steirer Wacht

Andrej Šiško was the founder of a paramilitary organization called "Štajerska varda" ( Steirer Wacht ). The name is intended to assert territorial claims in the Austrian state of Styria . According to Šiško, the organization was founded in 2017 to maintain peace and quiet and to protect the border and it should have a few hundred members. Members of the organization marched in an olive green uniform and partially armed in a forest near the Austrian border in September 2018. After the march, the Slovenian police announced an investigation and carried out five house searches. On September 6, 2018, Šiško and one other man were arrested.

In March 2019, Šiško was sentenced to eight months in prison for calling for the overthrow of the constitutional order. In October 2019, the district court in Maribor confirmed the first instance judgment, which thus became final.
