Senate election in the Czech Republic in 2012

In the Senate elections in the Czech Republic in 2012 , 27 of the 81 seats in the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic were re-elected. The first ballot took place on October 12 and 13, 2012, the runoff elections on October 19 and 20, 2012.

Starting position

A third of the senators were newly elected. Of the senators whose term of office was expiring, 14 belonged to the liberal-conservative Občanská Demokratieická strana (ODS), six to the social democratic Česká strana sociálně Demokratieická (ČSSD) and four to the Christian Democratic Křesťanská a democická unie - Československá strana lidová . The remaining three senators belonged to the communist Komunistická strana Čech a Moravy , the conservative TOP 09 and the regional electoral association Ostravak . Overall, the strongest party in the Senate before the election was the ČSSD with 39 seats and the ODS with 25 seats. In the 2010 Senate election, the CSSD had already won an absolute majority of the seats in the Senate, but lost it again through two party withdrawals.

A civil coalition consisting of ODS, TOP 09 and Věci veřejné (VV) under Petr Nečas has ruled since the 2010 parliamentary elections . However, the latter had left the coalition in April 2012 and the government only had a majority in the House of Representatives through the LIDEM spin-off from the VV. The government did not have a majority in the Senate.

Result

The ČSSD was able to win seven seats and thus achieved an absolute majority of the seats in the Senate. The ODS lost ten seats. In addition, the Greens and, for the first time, the Pirate Party were able to win a seat, plus two independents.
