In Saxony there are 79 hospitals with around 25,400 hospital beds. With around 45,000 employees, the hospitals are one of the most important employers in the Free State. Every year around 945,000 inpatients are treated. Among the facilities are the University Clinic Carl Gustav Carus Dresden , the University Clinic Leipzig (both institutions under public law) and the Municipal Clinic Chemnitz as maximum care providers, as well as nine main providers , the municipal houses in Dresden (Friedrichstadt) , Görlitz , Leipzig and Zwickau , which are partially privatized in Freiberg and Hoyerswerda (both Sana ) as well as the two Helios clinics in Aue and Plauen. There are also 17 special clinics: the two heart centers in Dresden and Leipzig , eleven psychiatric / neurological clinics, a center for pulmonology, allergology, respiratory medicine and thoracic and vascular surgery, and three orthopedic centers.

Some of the clinics are certified cancer centers, with the Carl Gustav Carus University Hospital in Dresden standing out as a BMBF- funded center. There are a total of 21 breast, twelve colon cancer, three skin cancer and five prostate cancer centers in Saxony. There are also 18 stroke centers. After 1989, the hospitals were completely renovated, closed, used for other purposes or replaced by new buildings. "The economic situation of hospitals in 2009 is best in Saxony-Anhalt / Thuringia and Saxony," according to the RWI Hospital Rating Report 2011 . The goal of the state government is to divide the ownership of hospitals into thirds. Acquired hospitals are now largely in the hands of non-profit and private providers. The world's largest heart center , the Leipzig Heart Center ( belonging to the Leipzig University Hospital , privately owned by Rhön-Klinikum AG since 1994 and part of the Helios since 2014) and the Dresden Heart Center ( belonging to the Dresden University Hospital , since 2002 under Sana AG) were privatized before with Gießen / Marburg a complete university clinic (2006 under Rhön-Klinikum AG) was privatized.

There are several former Wismut hospitals and rehabilitation clinics in the south of Saxony , which in the 1950s were much better equipped than the medical facilities in the rest of the GDR. One of them is the Erlabrunn hospital , the first new hospital building in the GDR.

The Carus Consilium Sachsen (CCS) health region arose from an application for a BMBF competition and brings together partners from research, health care, health care, patient representation, as well as business and politics from the Dresden region and eastern Saxony. The opponent in the Leipzig region is the Association for the Promotion of the Health Economy in the Leipzig Region e. V. (VFG). In 2014, the comprehensive association Health Saxony e. V.
