The Heart Center Leipzig is a specialist hospital in Leipzig with the care contract for heart surgery, cardiology and pediatric cardiology. It was put into operation on September 16, 1994 at a newly developed clinic location in the Probstheida district and has been privately owned since it opened, initially by Rhön-Klinikum AG , and from 2014 by Helios Kliniken . Thanks to a cooperation agreement with the Free State of Saxony and the University of Leipzig , which has existed from the start , the heart center has the status of a university clinic , whose professors are members of the Medical Faculty of the University of Leipzig. Diana Lohmann is the managing director.

With 440 inpatient and 10 day hospital beds, the Leipzig Heart Center is one of the largest heart centers in the world. It ties in with Leipzig's history: The Leipzig University Hospital founded the first clinic for cardiovascular surgery in Europe in 1961 . In 1999, the world's first robotic operating theater was put into operation. The Leipzig example of a private university clinic was followed in 2002 by Dresden with the Dresden Heart Center (owner: Sana Kliniken ) and in 2006 by Hesse with a complete university clinic ( University Clinic Gießen and Marburg , 95% owned by Rhön-Klinikum AG).

The heart center is in close proximity to the HELIOS Park-Klinikum Leipzig , a standard care hospital , and the Leipzig Medical Care Center (with two branch offices distributed throughout the city).

In 2014, the Helios clinics received approval from the Federal Cartel Office to acquire the heart center as well as the Park Hospital (now HELIOS Park-Klinikum Leipzig) and the Leipzig MVZ von Rhön after they had sold two of their clinics in the Leipzig region (in Borna and Zwenkau ) Has.

Clinics and departments

The Leipzig Heart Center is organized into three clinics and four medical departments.

The following interdisciplinary centers also exist:

  • GUCH Center (outpatient clinic for adults with congenital heart defects)
  • Medical care centers in Meißen and Leipzig
  • Leipzig Heart Institute (responsible for research projects)

research

International research and teaching are an integral part of the Leipzig Heart Center. The focus of cardiovascular research at the University Clinic for Cardiac Surgery, the University Clinic for Cardiology - HELIOS Endowed Professorship and the University Clinic for Pediatric Cardiology at the Leipzig Heart Center range from basic science and preclinical studies to the implementation of clinical studies, registers and cohorts at national and international institutions and specialists take part.

The close cooperation between the research center and the clinics and departments of the heart center form the basis for the rapid transfer of the results into everyday clinical practice. The research area currently employs around 40 people who - in collaboration with the hospital staff - are responsible for supervising various research assignments. In addition to various laboratory and evaluation rooms, two fully equipped operating theaters are available on a total area of around 800 m². One of the two houses a state-of-the-art surgical robot.

In addition, the “Leipzig Heart Institute” (LHI) was founded in 2015. The LHI is an independent company, half of which is funded by the Leipzig Heart Center and half by the HELIOS clinics. The LHI carries out research projects in the field of cardiovascular medicine in close cooperation with the Leipzig Heart Center. The main focus is on developing new therapy methods in cardiovascular surgery, interventional cardiology and electrophysiology in close and unrestricted cooperation with industrial partners and putting them into clinical use. The institute is managed by Gerhard Hindricks, Medical Director of the Heart Center Leipzig and Chief Physician of the Rhythmology Department.

In addition, the LHI has created a business unit for digital innovations in health care with a view to the subject of “ Health 4.0 ”. This "Leipzig Heart Digital" is managed by Andreas Bollmann. The focus in the digital area is on the automation and digitization of treatment processes, the analysis of big data , the application of machine learning and prediction models based on artificial intelligence for risk patients, as well as advice on the development and evaluation of new technologies such as apps or devices.

Varia

The management of the Meyer'sche Häuser housing company had planned to build another housing estate in Leipzig in due course and bought plenty of land in Probstheida as a precautionary measure . In 1991, at the insistence of the city of Leipzig, this land was sold “below market value” (quote: Dieter Pommer, member of the Board of Trustees, May 26, 2020) to the Rhön Clinic , which established the Leipzig Heart Center (now part of the Helios Clinics ).
