history

The university was founded in 1635 by Cardinal Péter Pázmány as a Jesuit college . At that time Tyrnau belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary . The educational structure of the university followed the Ratio Studiorum , so initially there was only a humanities and a theological faculty. The establishment of the Faculty of Law in 1667 represented a fundamental step in the development of the university. After the establishment of the Medical Faculty in 1769, the structure of the university resembled that of other European universities.

As a result of the attempts at reform in the education system, on February 1, 1777, Queen Maria Theresa signed the order to move the University of Tyrnau to Buda . This ended the previous university tradition in Trnava after 142 years. Today's university tradition in the city, which can be distinguished from this, began in 1992 with the establishment of the University of Trnava .
