Alvan Wentworth Chapman

Alvan Wentworth Chapman , also Alvin Wentworth Chapman (born September 28, 1809 in Southampton, Massachusetts , † April 6, 1899 in Apalachicola, Florida ) was an American doctor and botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Chapm. "

Life

Chapman graduated from Amherst College , Massachusetts in 1830 as a BA. In 1833 he started studying medicine. In 1835 he moved to Florida , where he moved to Apalachicola in 1847 after stints in Quincy and Marianna . He began to devote himself to botany. Chapman came into contact with Asa Gray and John Torrey , to whom he sent, among other things, plants that he had collected for identification.

In 1866, Chapman was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Honors

The genus Chapmannia Torr. et A. Gray from the legume family (Fabaceae) is named after him. In Apalachicola, the Chapman Elementary School and the Chapman Botanical Gardens are named in his honor.
