The Coimbra-A train station (also called Estação de Coimbra , Estação de Coimbra-Cidade or Estação Nova de Coimbra ) is a train station in the Portuguese city of Coimbra . It is located downtown closer than that on the Linha do Norte located main railway station Coimbra-B and with this with a branch line connected.

history

The station was opened on October 18, 1885 by the Companhia Real dos Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses , at the same time as the branch line called Ramal de Coimbra to the Coimbra-B station, which opened in 1864. In 1905 the station was expanded and the 162 meter long tracks were expanded to 254 meters. In 1906 the Ramal da Lousã went into operation from the Coimbra-Parque train station to Lousã . The Parque station was connected to the Coimbra-A station with a single-track line that was let into the street, so that the previous terminus station now received a through track. In 2006 the Ramal da Lousã between Coimbra-A and Lousã was shut down in order to convert it into a line of the Mondego Metro . Due to the financial difficulties in Portugal, no reopening date is known.

Plant and reception building

The station is located on Largo das Amaias, in downtown Coimbra, directly on the banks of the Mondego . The station building is designed at right angles to the head rails. It has a stone wall front, the striking symbol is the clock on the front, and it has blue side wings. The connecting track to Coimbra-Parque runs past the wing facing the Mondego. The station has four tracks, three of which are platform tracks. The fourth track, for parking trains, joins the two neighboring platform tracks shortly before the station building. There are also sidings to the industrial plants to the north.

traffic

Since the end of traffic on Ramal da Lousã, all trains have ended in Coimbra-A. The station is used exclusively for local and regional traffic, all trains are operated by CP Regional . Urbano local trains connect Coimbra-A with Figueira da Foz . There are also regional connections to Aveiro . An inter- regional train runs once a day from Lisbon Santa Apolónia via Linha do Oeste and Leiria to Coimbra-A. The return train only runs to Caldas da Rainha . All trains that arrive at Coimbra-A station also serve Coimbra-B.

future

Because of the isolation of the Ramal da Lousã from the rest of the Portuguese rail network, the CP discussed a tunnel connection between Coimbra-A and Coimbra-Parque. However, this project was postponed in favor of the idea of the City of Coimbra to introduce the Mondego Metro . It is still unclear whether CP trains will continue to stop in Coimbra-A after the introduction of the Mondego Metro.
