The Aveiro train station is the station of the Portuguese city of Aveiro . It is located on the Linha do Norte , which was built in Iberian broad gauge (1668 mm) and on the meter-gauge Linha do Vouga .

history

New station building opened in 2005

The station was opened at the same time as the Linha do Norte from Lisbon to Vila Nova de Gaia on April 10, 1864. Initially, the route was not planned through Aveiro, only on the initiative of the local MP José Estêvão was Aveiro connected to the Linha do Norte.

In 1908 the Linha do Vouga was built parallel to the Linha do Norte between Aveiro and Espinho , which has been owned by the CP since 1946. The branch line to Viseu that branches off from it was closed in 1990.

In 1916 the station was completely rebuilt and the facade of the reception building was given azulejos .

These azulejos were restored in 1986 and 2000. In 2005 a new one was built next to the old station building, in which all of the station's facilities are housed. The old station building therefore lost its original purpose.

Reception building and facility

The station has two reception buildings. The old reception building is known for its azulejo facade, they represent various motifs related to Aveiro, such important people or sights. Today the old reception building is used for art exhibitions.

In 2005, the new station building next door was inaugurated, at the same time a new road was built to develop the station, and traffic has been partially underground since then. A CP travel center, restaurants and shops can be found in the new reception building.

Today the station has five platform tracks that are between 440 and 760 meters long. The platforms are all 321 meters long and have 90 centimeter high edges. The station used to have branch lines to the ports on the three canals of Aveiros.
