Colin Tarrant (born June 14, 1952 in Shirebrook , Derbyshire , † January 26, 2012 in Bristol ) was a British actor .

Life

Education and theater

Tarrant was born in the East Midlands . He grew up in Shirebrook; there he attended the Shirebrook Grammar School. He took part in theatrical productions at the school and was president of the debating club. Tarrant studied English and drama ( drama ) at the University of Exeter . He received his teaching diploma from Clifton College, University of Nottingham . He initially worked briefly as a teacher, but then decided to take up acting.

Tarrant began his stage career at the Northcott Theater in Exeter. He then played from 1975 to 1977 with the Medium Fair Community Theater Company in Exeter, a theater company that had emerged from the drama department of Exeter University. After leaving Medium Fair, he was a member of Peter Cheeseman's theater company at the Victoria Theater in Stoke-on-Trent . Under Cheeseman's direction, he starred in the Shakespeare plays King Lear (as Edmund) and The Tempest ; He also took over the role of Captain Jack Absolute in comedy at the Victoria Theater The Rivals by Richard Brinsley Sheridan . He has appeared with various theater companies such as Foco Novo and Shared Experience , and at the Leicester Phoenix Arts Center. From 1980 to 1982 he played with the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon and in London under the direction of Ronald Eyre and Trevor Nunn .

In the further course of his career, Tarrant played again and again in the theater; in recent years Tarrant has mainly appeared as a stage actor. In 2005 he played at the Nottingham Playhouse in Nottingham in the play Old Big 'Ead in the Spirit of Man by Stephen Lowe . Tarrant played the legendary British soccer player and coach Brian Clough . He received very good reviews for his performance. With this production Tarrant also went on a nationwide tour of Great Britain in 2006. In 2006 another stage role followed at the Nottingham Playhouse; Tarrant played the tramp Davies in the Pinter play The Janitor . Critics spoke of a "brilliant" presentation. In 2008/2009 he played the role of "Old Gentleman" in Mike Kenny's stage version of the children's book The Railway Children , in a production of the York Theater Royal at the National Railway Museum in York . In April 2009 he played the role of hotelier Whitchell in the play Honeymoon Suite by Richard Bean at the New Vic Theater in Basford ; his partner was Stephanie Turner as a Labor politician and baroness. In 2010/2011 he played the tragic role of John Clarke in the play Calendar Girls on a nationwide tour .

Movie and TV

Tarrant has also been a regular television operator since the late 1960s . He made his television debut with a small role as a worker in the television film Elphida (1987). He had his first leading role on television, alongside Imogen Stubbs , in the three-part BBC film adaptation of the novel The Rainbow by DH Lawrence ; he played the role of young cousin Will Brangwen.

From 1990 to 2002 Tarrant played the role of police officer Inspector Andrew Monroe in the British television series The Bill . This was Tarrant's most famous role as an actor. Tarrant's character, Andrew Monroe, a former miner, represented the type of authoritarian police officer who was respected by superiors and subordinates alike, who knew his rules exactly and in a polite but determined manner advised his colleagues to comply with them.

Tarrant had after his departure from episode roles and guest roles in the television series Holby City (2004), Heartbeat (2007), Doctors (2007; 2009), Inspector Barnaby (2011; as barman Eric in the episode The Sleeper Under the Hill ) and as Ted Williamson in an episode of the television series Casualty , which aired on BBC 1 on December 11, 2010.

In 2008 he had a small role alongside Robert Carlyle as Mr. Biggs in the drama Summer ; he played the character's father and lawyer Rachel.

Private

Tarrant married his wife Valerie Hays in 1971; the marriage was later divorced. Tarrant was the father of two sons. His son Juma Kwasi Woodhouse (* 1988) comes from the relationship with his former, long-term partner Patricia Woodhouse; another son, Louis Morris-Tarrant (* 2011) comes from the relationship with his current partner Sabrina Morris.

Tarrant suffered from depression , partly due to financial problems . He died on January 26, 2012 in the hospital, the Bristol Royal Infirmary, of stab wounds to the neck and chest that he had inflicted on himself the day before in his apartment in Bristol.

A hearing in the Flax Bourton Coroner's Court in April 2012 found that Tarrant's death was a suicide .
