The Senate of California ( English California State Senate ) is the upper house of the California State Legislature , the legislature of the US state California .

The Chamber of Parliament is composed of 40 senators, each representing an electoral district. The MPs are each elected for four-year terms. Each of these designated electoral districts has an average population of 931,349 residents, significantly higher than the estimated 704,566 residents of a California congressional district. The terms of office of the senators are staggered so that half of them are re-elected every two years. The senators from the odd-numbered constituencies are elected in the years divisible by four, while the senators from the even-numbered constituencies are elected in the even-numbered years in between. The senators' term of office is limited to two terms.

The boardroom is located together with the State Assembly in the California State Capitol in the capital Sacramento .

Tasks of the Senate

As in the upper houses of other states and territories, as well as in the US Senate , the California Senate has special tasks compared to the House of Representatives that go beyond legislation. It is the responsibility of the Senate to confirm or reject nominations by the governor in his cabinet, other executive offices, commissions and authorities.

Structure of the chamber

The President of the Senate is the acting Vice-Governor . He only takes part in votes in order to bring about a decision in the event of a stalemate. In the absence of the Vice-Governor, the respective President presides over the plenary sessions pro tempore . This is elected by the majority parliamentary group in the Senate and later confirmed by the Chamber. The current Vice-Governor and Senate President is Democrat Gavin Newsom , and President pro tempore is Democrat Kevin de León from the 24th constituency.

(For majority leader leader Majority ) of the Democrats was Bill Monning 17 constituency chosen; Opposition leader ( minority leader ) is the Republican Jean Fuller from the 16th constituency.
