The California State Capitol is located in Sacramento on the west end of Capitol Park. The area is framed by L Street to the north, N Street to the south, 10th Street to the west and 15th Street to the east. The Capitol houses the California Legislature and the California Governor's Office .

Exterior view

The building is based on the remote Capitol in Washington, DC On the west side are both projecting corners and the portico in the middle. Below the portico are seven granite arches that support the portico. Eight fluted Corinthian columns line the portico. The gable, supported by a cornice, shows a statue of Minerva and the three figures representing education, justice and mining.

A two-story rotunda with a dome rises above the flat roof with a balustrade . The lower part consists of a colonnade of Corinthian columns, the upper part of Corinthian pilasters . There are large arched windows behind it. The dome is 6.70 m high and has a smaller dome with a golden ball.

The 40 members of the California Senate meet in one large boardroom. The use of the color red is a nod to the British House of Lords , which, like the Californian Senate, is the upper house of a bicameral system . The red carpet has a Victorian pattern. An electrical reproduction of the original gas chandelier hangs from the coffered ceiling.

The Latin phrase " Senatoris est civitatis libertatem tueri " ("It is the duty of a senator to protect people's freedom") adorns the cornice. A George Washington portrait of Jane Stuart (the daughter of Gilbert Stuart ) looks down from the wall above. The state seal is located above the painting.

Gilded Corinthian columns support the gallery above. There are dark red curtains between the pillars, which can be closed if necessary. In the lower area of ​​the room there are high arched windows, above are rectangular windows. Behind the lectern are two chairs with red silk cushions that are reserved for the President pro tempore and the California State Assembly Speaker, but have never been used.

The California State Assembly boardroom is at the opposite end of the Senate. As with the Senate, the use of the color green comes from the British House of Commons . On the pediment above the lectern is a Latin quote from Abraham Lincoln : legislatorum est justas leges condere ("It is the duty of the legislature to pass just laws"). Almost every decorative element is identical to the Senate Hall.

2001 attack

On January 16, 2001, Michael Bowers, a convicted driver, drove his semi-trailer into the south porch of the Capitol. The tank exploded, killing the driver and damaging the building for $ 15 million.
