The New York State Capitol is the seat of the legislature of the state of New York . It is located in its capital Albany . On January 29, 1979, the building was declared a National Historic Landmark . As a Historic District Contributing Property , it is part of the Lafayette Park Historic District .
building
Work began in 1867 and lasted 32 years. Due to the astonishingly high costs of US $ 25,000,000, which currently corresponds to around half a billion US dollars, the architects changed several times, all of them leading architects of their time. This means that the style and design vary between the individual floors:
- 1867–75 Thomas Fuller designed the ground floor in the neo-Romanesque style ;
- 1875–83, Leopold Eidlitz and Henry H. Richardson designed the following two floors in the neo-Renaissance style ;
- In 1883–99, Isaac G. Perry completed the building, adding elements of Victorian architecture to the original designs .
The facade was clad with white granite and a lot of marble was used inside. Due to the heavy weight of the building, cracks soon formed and the foundation sank. The building threatened to drift towards State Street. To prevent this, a wide, 51 m long flight of steps was placed in front of the south-east facade as a counterweight. The dome and other roof structures planned by Perry also had to be dispensed with. This makes it one of ten state capitols nationwide without a dome.
Interior work
Richardson also made the lush Great Western Staircase , also known as the Million Dollar Staircase . Its construction alone took 14 years. The staircase has 444 steps and reaches a height of over 36 meters.
The plenary hall was originally roofed by a cross vault made of sandstone, resting on four granite pillars . The hall was considered one of the most impressive public spaces of its time, the vault as the one with the largest span in the world. After the static deficiencies had been determined, a coffered ceiling was put in to protect the delegates from any falling parts. Thus the room was robbed of its original character.
