Sakura ( Japanese 佐 倉 市 , -shi , literally: auxiliary warehouse ) is a large city in Japan . The city is located near Tokyo in Chiba Prefecture .

history

Sakura is an old castle town , where various daimyo families resided in Sakura Castle in the Tokugawa period . From 1746 the daimyo of the Hotta family ( 堀 田 ) took over the castle with an income of 100,000 koku . After the Meiji restoration , the castle fell into disrepair, only the ramparts are partially preserved. Today the National Museum of Japanese History is located there .

Sakura received city rights on April 1, 1954 , after the merger of the municipality of Sakura ( 佐 倉 町 , -machi ) with another ( 臼 井 町 ) and 4 villages ( 志 津 村 , 根 郷 村 , 和 田村 , 弥 富 村 ) in the Imba district .

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the city of Sakura, the Dutch mill builder "Verbij Hoogmade BV" built a concrete polder windmill ( ground sail ) with brick cladding (earthquake), four floors, codend tracking and bucket wheel. The windmill is called De Liefde ( Die Liebe ) after the first Dutch sailing ship that docked on Japan's coast in 1600 and is visible from afar on the south-east bank of Lake Imba within the Sakura Furusato Park on a circular artificial island surrounded by a 6 m wide moat.

  1. This is the onomatopoeic description of sakura . That doesn't have to mean a cherry , even if it appears in the coat of arms.
