Marie Nishiyama

Marie Nishiyama ( Japanese 西山 ま り え Nishiyama Marie ; born April 21, 1969 in Ichikawa , Chiba Prefecture ) is a Japanese pianist, harpsichordist and harpist. She is a specialist in early music .

life and work

Marie Nishiyama comes from a family that has been in the steel trade ( 西山 鋼 業 Nishiyama Kōgyō ) since 1923 . She began studying piano at the age of three. In 1992 she obtained her diploma as a piano soloist at the Tokyo Music Academy . In 1994 she also did her master's degree as a harpsichordist. She studied harpsichord with Yoshio Watanabe and organ with Yoshiko Ueda . Her interest in early music led her to Andreas Staier , Jörg-Andreas Bötticher , Rinaldo Alessandrini and others at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis . She deepened her baroque harp studies with Mara Galassi at the Scuola di Musica Civica di Milano .

In 1997 she received first prize at the Yamanashi Competition for Early Music in Kofu (Japan) for her harpsichord appearances . At the 11th Yamanashi Early Music Festival she also won first prize in the harpsichord category.

In addition to recordings in Japan, Nishiyama has also made recordings in Europe, especially in Spain and France. Her recording Tañer Fantasía - Música ibérica para tecla was highly praised by the specialist press in Spain. This sound carrier was recorded in Japan in 1999 and released in Spain in 2003 on the Enchiriadis label. Her solo albums Dance du Roy et Chonson (Renaissance harp), Lamento di Tristano (medieval Gothic harp), Jupiter - Les orages des passions - Forqueray Pieces de Clavecin and JS Bach French Suites (harpsichord) received the highest praise from Japanese specialist critics . Since 2007 she has released a series of recordings with the piano works of Johann Sebastian Bach on the Anthonello Mode label .

Marie Nishiyama has given concerts in Japan, Europe, the United States of America and Brazil. She has appeared regularly at festivals as well as on radio and television as a soloist and as a member of chamber music ensembles such as the Concerto Vocale , the Ferrara Ensemble, or together with René Jacobs and Crawford Young . She is a member of the Ensemble for Early Music Anthonello . Overall, Marie Nishiyama is an extremely experienced soloist for the harpsichord and the historical harp.
