National Road 6 was established between Tokyo and Sendai in 1920. On December 4, 1952, it was classified as a 1st class national road. However, on April 1, 1965, this distinction was abolished.
By following the Fukushima nuclear disaster decorated exclusion zone with a radius of 20 km around the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant , which was officially established on 22 April 2011 the use of the 40-km section between is Hirono and Haranomachi in Hamadōri of Fukushima prefecture only still allowed with official exemption.
