The Suites-gū ( Japanese 水 天宮 'Suites Shrine' ) is a Shintō shrine in the Chūō district in Tokyo .

Are revered Ame-no-Minaka-nushi no kami ( 天御中主神 ) Emperor Antoku , his mother Kenreimon-in ( 建礼門院 ) and his grandmother Nii-no-ama ( 二位尼 ). Suites is the Japanese name of the Buddhist water deity Varuna , who was identified with the Shinto deity Ame-no-minaka-nushi.

history

The shrine was built in 1818 by the daimyo Arima Noriyori on the grounds of the Arima residence in Edo and was a branch of the shrine of the same name in their home loan Kurume . As a result of the Meiji Restoration , the Arima lost their property in what is now Akabanebashi in the Minato district and the shrine was moved to its current location in 1872.

According to tradition, a pregnant woman is said to have been given the rope to the bell when visiting the shrine and to have tied it around her stomach, which led to a good birth. And because dogs usually get a good litter, the custom developed from this to come to the shrine and pray on the day of the dog, which is determined by the passage of the branches of the earth ( 戌 の 日 ), especially in the fifth month of pregnancy . This attracted a lot of visitors, so that a kind of shrine suburb developed around it.

In the years following the Pacific War , the shrine was raised to provide rental income on the ground floor.
