Sumiyoshi shrine
The name Sumiyoshi Shrine is given to around 2,000 shrines in Japan in which the three Sumiyoshi-Kami are venerated. Important shrines from this group are:
- the Sumiyoshi Taisha in Osaka , Sumiyoshi District
- Sumiyoshi Shrine in Shimonoseki in Yamaguchi Prefecture , see Sumiyoshi Shrine (Shimonoseki)
- the Sumiyoshi Shrine in Fukuoka, Hakata District in Fukuoka Prefecture , see Sumiyoshi Shrine (Fukuoka)
These three are also known as the "three great Sumiyoshi shrines" and were also the highest shrine ( ichi-no-miya ) in their respective province . They go back to the mythical Samhan campaign of the equally mythical Jingū -kōgō, as well as:
- the Sumiyoshi Shrine in Iki, Nagasaki Prefecture , see Sumiyoshi Shrine (Iki)
- the Fūrōgū ( 風浪 宮 ) in Ōgawa , Fukuoka Prefecture
Daughter shrines of these five are:
- the Honsumigayoshi-jinja in the Higashinada district in Kobe
- the Sumiyoshi Shrine in Takashima in Shiga Prefecture , see Sumiyoshi Shrine (Takashima)
- the Sumiyoshi shrine in Akashi in Hyōgo prefecture , see Sumiyoshi shrine (Akashi)
- the Sumiyoshi Shrine in Hiroshima , Naka District, see Sumiyoshi Shrine (Hiroshima)
- the Sumiyoshi shrine in Tokyo's Chūō district, see Sumiyoshi shrine (Tokyo)
- of the Kōra-Taisha in Kurume , Fukuoka Prefecture
In contrast, the following shrine bears the name Sumiyoshi Shrine, but has been dedicated to a different deity in the course of history:
