The Sumiyoshi Shrine ( Japanese 住 吉 神社 , Sumiyoshi-jinja ) is a Shinto shrine in the Hakata-ku district of Fukuoka . It is probably the oldest Shinto shrine on the Japanese main island of Kyūshū and is also considered the oldest Sumiyoshi shrine at all. The current buildings date from 1623 and were completed by order of the then daimyo Kuroda Nagamasa ( 黒 田 長 政 ; 1568–1623).

It was consecrated from the beginning to the three Sumiyoshi-Kami , which are said to have been originally worshiped here by Jingū -kōgō. Later, Jingū-kōgō and Amaterasu -ō-mi-kami were added as guest kami ( aidono-no-kami or regional haishi ). Legend has it that Jingū-kōgō had a vision in this shrine in which she was predicted that she would give birth to a son (the later Ōjin -tennō), as well as the month of the birth itself.

The shrine does not give a bond to other shrines, but only to ships when they are launched , to shipping companies and to families. There is a special hall ( kitō-den ) on the shrine grounds for prayers of a purely personal nature .

The priesthood at the shrine is hereditary and, according to credible sources, has been vouched for for at least 44 generations. Up until the 20th century, very strict rules of cleanliness prevailed for the resident priest. B. refrain from participating in a matsuri for 13 months after the death of one of his parents ; He was also forbidden from eating in his own house if one of the female members of his family who lived there was menstruating.

A special feature of the cleansing rites at the shrine is that the ablutions on the morning of Nago-shi-sai are carried out with hot instead of ice-cold water.

The Nago-shi-sai takes place on the banks of the Nakagawa from July 30th to 31st , based on the lunar calendar . Meanwhile, purity of mind and body and the removal of unhappiness are prayed for.
