The Hanzōmon Line ( Japanese 半 蔵 門 線 , Hanzōmon-sen ) is a subway line in Tokyo , Japan , which is managed by the Tokyo Metro . Their color on maps is purple Line color, the stations are marked with a Z followed by a number.

The 16.8 km long route connects the districts of Shibuya , Minato , Chiyoda , Chūō , Kōtō and Sumida . The trains operate from Shibuya Station with the Den'entoshi Line and from Oshiage Station with the Tōbu Isesaki Line .

The Hanzōmon Line is connected to all other Tokyo Metro and Toei lines except the Hibiya Line . You can get to this via the Tōbu Isesaki Line. It even shares four stations with the Ginza line .

The line is named after the west gate of the Imperial Palace ( Hanzōmon ), which in turn is named after the ninjutsu master Hattori Hanzō .

history

The Hanzōmon Line was planned as early as 1971 together with the Chiyoda Line and the Yūrakuchō Line to relieve the often overcrowded Ginza Line . The route should initially run from the Futako-Tamagawa station on the Den'entoshi line to a new station in the Kōtō district . In 1985, the Ministry of Transport submitted a second draft in which the terminus was in Matsudo in Chiba Prefecture . During the planning phase, the route was still called Line 11 .

Construction began in 1972 and completion was expected by 1975. However, the poor economic situation in Japan at that time lowered the Tōkyō Metro's revenues , which delayed the construction of the new lines. On August 1, 1978, the first section of the Hanzōmon line from Shibuya to Aoyama-itchōme station was opened.

In September 1979 the route was extended to Nagatachō without major incidents . The next extension to Ōtemachi , however, posed political problems, as the route was supposed to run directly under the Imperial Palace. Tokyo Metro decided to build the tunnel north past the palace, which required the construction of three new stations. In addition, the landowners delayed the completion of the construction. Hanzomon Railway Station opened in December 1982 and the complete extension to Mitsukoshi-mae was completed in January 1989.

Since then, extensions to Suitengu-mae (November 1990) and Oshiage (March 2003) have been built. The Ministry of Transport announced the planning of a further extension to Matsudo , which should be built by 2015. The Tokyo Metro, however, said that after the completion of the Fukutoshin line, all construction projects will be completed.
