Musashi-Murayama ( Japanese 武 蔵 村 山 市 , - shi ) is a city in the Japanese prefecture of Tokyo, west of Tokyo .

geography

Musashi-Murayama is west of Tokyo and north of Hachiōji .

history

The previously existing city of Murayama (Murayama- machi ) in North Tama County became an independent city (-shi) on November 3, 1970 . Since there has been a Murayama-shi in Yamagata prefecture / Dewa province since 1954 , the provincial name Musashi was placed in front of the city name in order to distinguish it , which here in Musashino ( 武 蔵 野 , literally the "Musashi fields" or "level") should refer.

For the Meiji Restoration in 1868, the area on four villages stretched ( Nakatō-, Yokota-, Mitsugi- and Kishi- mura , 中藤村,横田村,三ツ木村,岸村 ) and belonged first to the Prefecture Nirayama , since 1871 to Kanagawa , since the Tama transfer to Tokyo in 1893. From 1889 the four villages formed a community association. In two steps in 1908 and 1917 they merged to form Murayama village. The name Murayama of the area dates back to antiquity, was originally but when 群山 written, read as Mureyama and to refer to the Sayama Hill ( Sayama kyūryō 狭山丘陵 used) in today's prefectural border area between Tokyo and Saitama. In the early Middle Ages, the name appears in its current form Murayama, when the Murayama-tō ( 村 山 党 ) came from the area , one of the Musashi shichi-tō ( 武 蔵 七 党 ), seven allied clans of smaller nobles from Musashi who lived in Gempei -War achieved fame and many followers in the following Kamakura shogunate . Later the name was used for the well defendable south side of the Sayama hill country, where the modern Murayama is also located.

In 1954 Murayama became a [county] city. Between 1964 and 1966, the prefectural government built its largest public housing project in the city, the Murayama danchi, with over 5,000 units. The total population of Murayama increased from around 14,000 to over 41,000 between 1965 and 1970, exceeding 50,000 in 1975 and 60,000 in 1985.
