Loren James Shriver (born September 23, 1944 in Jefferson , Iowa , USA ) is a former American astronaut .

Shriver received a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering from the United States Air Force Academy in 1967 and a master's degree in aerospace engineering from Purdue University in 1968 .

In 1967 Shriver joined the United States Air Force and was a pilot instructor at Vance Air Force Base in Oklahoma from 1969 to 1973 . From 1973 to 1974 he was stationed in Thailand. In 1975 he was trained as a test pilot at Edwards Air Force Base and was also used as such from 1976.

Astronaut activity

In January 1978, Shriver was selected by NASA as an astronaut candidate. In 1985, 1990 and 1992 he took part in three space flights.

Shriver became Space Shuttle Program Manager for Launch Integration in 1993. In 1997 he became assistant director of shuttle launches and payloads at the Kennedy Space Center . From 2000 to 2006 he was the deputy program manager of the space shuttle program.

STS-10

STS-10 was canceled due to delays in its payload, a US Department of Defense satellite. Ken Mattingly, Loren Shriver, Ellison Onizuka, James Buchli and the US Air Force's first military astronaut payload specialist Gary Payton had been scheduled for this flight in November 1983.

STS-41-E

The US Department of Defense's STS-41-E satellite mission was canceled due to problems with the IUS upper level . Ken Mattingly, Loren Shriver, Ellison Onizuka, Jim Buchli and the US Air Force payload specialist Jeffrey Detroye were nominated as a team. The launch was planned for March 1984 with the space shuttle Challenger.

STS-61-M
