Gary Eugene Payton (born June 20, 1948 in Rock Island , Illinois , USA ) is a former American astronaut .

education

Payton received a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering from the United States Air Force Academy in 1971 and a master's degree in aerospace engineering from Purdue University in 1972 .

In 1973 Payton was trained as a pilot with the United States Air Force and also worked there as a pilot trainer. From 1976 to 1980 Payton worked as a spacecraft test controller at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. In February 1980 he was selected by the Air Force for the Manned Spaceflight Engineer Program.

Astronaut activity

Payton applied unsuccessfully for NASA's eleventh group of astronauts.

STS-10 or STS-41-E

The launch of STS-10 was planned for November 1983, but the flight had to be canceled due to delays in the secret payload. Ken Mattingly, Loren Shriver, Ellison Onizuka, Jim Buchli and the US Air Force payload specialist Gary Payton were nominated as a crew here.For July 1984 this military flight under the designation STS-41-E was put back into the program, but this satellite mission of the The US Department of Defense was also canceled due to problems with the IUS upper level. Ken Mattingly, Loren Shriver, Ellison Onizuka, Jim Buchli and the US Air Force payload specialist Jeffrey Detroye were nominated as a team here. The launch was planned for March 1984 with the space shuttle Challenger.

STS-41-H

This mission was to be carried out on behalf of the US Department of Defense in September 1984 or deploy a TDRS satellite instead. The mission was canceled due to problems with the IUS upper level. The crew nominated were Frederick Hauck, David Walker, Joseph Allen, Anna Fisher, Dale Gardner and the MSE payload specialists of the US Air Force Gary Payton and Frank Casserino. Daryl Joseph was scheduled as the replacement payload specialist.

STS-51-C

Payton made his first space flight on January 24, 1985 as a payload specialist with the space shuttle Discovery . The mission objective of STS-51-C was to deploy a geostationary reconnaissance satellite on behalf of the US Department of Defense .

After the space flight

In January 1995, Payton resigned from the Air Force and moved to Space Launch Technology in Washington, DC. In 2000 he moved to Orbimage, and in 2002 to the Missile Defense Agency. Since 2005 he has been the Air Force's Assistant Secretary of State for Space Programs.

Private

Gary Payton is married with one child.
