Terry Jonathan "TJ" Hart (born October 27, 1946 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ) is a former American astronaut .

Hart received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Lehigh University in 1968 and a master's degree in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1969 . In 1978 he received a Masters in Electrical Engineering from Rutgers University and in 1988 an Honorary Doctorate in Engineering from Lehigh University.

In 1969 Hart came to the United States Air Force Reserve Command and received pilot training there. He served as an interceptor pilot until 1973, when he joined the New Jersey Air National Guard . His main job was from 1968 to 1978 for Bell Telephone Laboratories .

Astronaut activity

In January 1978, Hart was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA. Hart was a member of the support teams for the space shuttle missions STS-1 , STS-2 , STS-3 and STS-7 .

On April 6, 1984, Hart started as a mission specialist with the space shuttle Challenger for the STS-41-C mission . The main task was the repair of the defective solar observation satellite SolarMax . In addition, the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) was suspended with 57 experiments and recaptured and brought back to Earth in a later mission. After seven days, Hart landed at Edwards Air Force Base .

After leaving NASA, Hart moved to AT&T in 1984 and was then a. a. President at Loral Skynet in Bedminster , New Jersey.
