Alexander Nikolayevich Pypin
Alexander Pypin ( Russian Александр Николаевич Пыпин ., Scientific transliteration Aleksandr Nikolaevich Pypin ; born March 25, jul. / 6. April 1833 greg. In Saratov , † November 26 jul. / 9. December 1904 greg. In Saint Petersburg ) was a Russian literary historian and ethnographer .
Career
Pypin studied general literature at Kazan University in 1849 and 1850 , and then from 1850 to 1858 at Saint Petersburg University . In the following time he undertook various study trips to other European countries until he became professor for general literary studies at St. Petersburg University in 1860 . In November of the next year he resigned from this position in protest against government interventions in internal areas of responsibility of the university. From 1862 he worked as a writer and editor of the magazines Sowremennik ("Der Zeitgenosse"; until the closure in 1866) and Westnik Jewropy ("Messenger of Europe"). In 1891 he became a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences .
