Esperanto / interlinguistics

Bengt Arne-Wickström was privately and directly confronted with the problems of international linguistic communication in his academic work. His children, who became active in the Esperanto youth , grew up with English (mother tongue), Swedish (father’s mother tongue), Norwegian and German (languages of the countries in which the family lived). Wickström also speaks French and Spanish.

This is why he was increasingly interested in problems of multilingualism , language learning and language justice.

Wickström already learned and used the international language Esperanto as a schoolboy and high school student in Sweden, but it was not until Norway and when he took part in the Esperanto World Congress in Warsaw in 1987 that he became active in the Esperanto movement and has been using the language for private and academic communication ever since .

He was a member of the organizing committee for the Esperanto World Congresses in Bergen (1991) and Vienna (1992).

As chairman of the local congress committee (Loka Kongresa Komitato) from 1995 to May 1999 he led the preparatory work for the 84th Esperanto World Congress in Berlin (1999), which was held under the patronage of the former Federal President Roman Herzog with more than 2,700 Esperanto speakers from 66 Countries on the congress theme "Globalization - an opportunity for peace?" Wickström looked after the honorary committee of the congress, which included high-ranking personalities from politics, science and culture.

More than 190 individual events - scientific, cultural-artistic and other - had to be coordinated in the implementation phase, in which Wickström was the director of the congress center (ICC) .

Wickström has been a member of the Society for Interlinguistics since 1993. He gave lectures at the annual conference in Berlin on the subjects of “Economy and Language” (2008), “Language Planning and Costs” (2016), “Cost-Based Language Planning” (2017) and “Percentage Rule, Local Authority and Successful Discrimination against a Minority: A few examples from Transylvania and southern Slovakia ”(2019).

The presentations were published in the supplements to the GIL bulletin "Interlinguistic Information", published 2009–2010 by Sabine Fiedler and from 2011 by Cyril Brosch and Sabine Fiedler

Wickström works with other GIL members on research projects, for example with Michele Gazzola, Cyrill Brosch and Sabine Fiedler in the MIME project. See also under fonts.

As the host, Wickström opened the joint interlinguistics colloquium for Wilhelm Ostwald of the Society for Interlinguistics, the Wilhelm Ostwald Society in Großbothen and the Esperanto League Berlin with an Ostwald exhibition of the archive of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences in November 1996 in the Economics Faculty of the Humboldt University in Berlin.

The occasion was Ostwald's lecture "The international auxiliary language and Esperanto", held in 1906 in the newly opened commercial college in Berlin , which as a university institution with a business focus with the economics-oriented university institute founded in 1886 at the Friedrich -Wilhelms-Universität was merged in 1946 to form the Faculty of Economics at the Humboldt University in Berlin.

With a view to the anniversaries, Wickström referred in his opening speech the words of Ostwald from 1906 "The concern of the old practitioners that the scientifically educated businessman would be too taught, that is, unusable, has proven to be unfounded." Also to the education of his students. And in the spirit of Ostwald, who stated that “The essence of this new movement lies in the knowledge that all areas of life are accessible to science”, Wickström emphasized the value of interlinguistics for his faculty as well.
