Jilin ( 吉林市 , Jílín Shì ) is a district-free city in the province of the same name in the northeast of the People's Republic of China . The city is located on the Songhua Jiang River , and the city center is about ten kilometers below the Fengman Dam , one of the largest dams in China. The administrative area of ​​the city has an area of ​​27,722 km² and about 4.41 million inhabitants (end of 2010).

Administrative structure

The city of Jilin is composed of four districts, one district and four independent cities. These are:

  • District Chuanying (船营区), 711 square kilometers, a population of 450,000;
  • Longtan district (龙潭区), 1,209 km², 500,000 inhabitants;
  • Changyi District (昌邑 区), 865 km², 590,000 inhabitants;

Jilin is a fast growing industrial metropolis with 1,469,722 inhabitants in 2010, in 1990 the population was 1,090,329. Mainly iron and steel processing companies as well as the chemical industry are located in the city, and food processing also plays a major role.

In a ranking of cities according to their quality of life, Jilin was ranked 169th out of 231 cities worldwide in 2018.

Between January and February, Jiang Reif forms in large quantities on the trees along the Songhua River . This is caused by the rising mist from the river, which freezes drop by drop at temperatures around −10 to −20 ° C. This is considered to be one of the four natural wonders of China.

history

Jilin was not established as a garrison town until 1673. In 1913 the city got a rail connection to Changchun . Like other cities in Manchuria , Jilin came under Japanese occupation from 1931 to 1945. The heavy industrial expansion of the city is largely due to the Japanese, who viewed Manchuria as their raw material store.

On November 13, 2005, at petrochemical plant No. 101, by the Petrochina Company , a series of explosions known as the Jilin Chemical Spill . According to official information, the Songhua Jiang River was contaminated with around 100 tons of benzene .

From 1927 to 1930, the future Korean dictator Kim Il-sung lived in the city and attended a middle school here. He was imprisoned in the fall of 1929. A statue commemorates his stay in Jilin.

On May 13, 2020 it was reported that after the recurrence of 21 COVID-19 cases in a suburb of the city, it will be largely sealed off as another major city.
