Gernot Mittler

Gernot Mittler (born April 6, 1940 in Obermendig ) is a German politician ( SPD ). He was finance minister from 1993 to 2006 and a member of the state parliament of Rhineland-Palatinate from 1996 to 2006 .

education and profession

Mittler attended the Catholic elementary school in Obermendig for eight years; After graduating from the Kreis Handelsschule Mayen in 1956 and subsequent training as a banker, he worked for the Deutsche Landesrentenbank in Bonn from 1959 to 1963 , then attended the higher business school in Cologne for three years , where he graduated with a degree in business administration (FH). Until 1986 Mittler worked as a managing director in the private sector, then moved to the board of directors of Kreissparkasse Mayen and became its chairman in 1988.

politics

Mittler has been a member of the SPD since 1960. In 1993 he was the then Prime Minister Rudolf Scharping as Minister of Finance appointed to the Cabinet.

Mittler had been a member of the Federal Council since 1993 and was also a member of the mediation committee for the state of Rhineland-Palatinate .

In 1996 Mittler became a member of the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament , to which he was a member for 10 years. He did not stand as a candidate for the 2006 state election and also left the cabinet. At the time of his resignation, Mittler was the senior finance minister; he held this office longer than any finance minister nationwide. His successor in the office of Finance Minister for Rhineland-Palatinate was the previous State Secretary Ingolf Deubel .

Gernot Mittler was honorary president of Special Olympics Germany from 2005 to 2014 .
Since it was founded in 2004, Mittler has been chairman of the Association of Friends of the Benedictine Abbey of Maria Laach .
