William Michael Toweel , called Willie Toweel , (born April 6, 1934 in Benoni , South Africa ; † December 25, 2017 ) was a South African boxer who fought in various weight classes.

amateur

In 1952 he won the bronze medal in flyweight at the Olympic Games in Helsinki .

professional

Toweel entered the professional business in 1953 and started with a series of twenty victories. He fought for the vacant title of South African bantamweight champion, which he defended once. In May 1954 he received the vacant featherweight title. He was able to successfully defend this title twice.

In September 1955 he challenged the reigning bantamweight world champion, the French Robert Cohen . The fight ended in a draw, although Toweel went down twice in the second and once in the tenth round.

He suffered his first professional defeat in December 1955 in the fight for the combined South Africa and Commonwealth lightweight title against his compatriot Johnny van Rensburg . He won the rematch in June 1956 on points. A third fight against van Rensburg two months later ended in a draw. He was then able to defend the Commonwealth title three times before losing it in May 1959 after a knockout in the tenth round against David Chamley from England . The last career highlight he reached in August 1960 when he won the vacant South Africa welterweight title. He could not defend it, however, as he lost it three weeks later after a disqualification defeat. Toweel lost the last fight in October of the same year against Emile Griffith of the US Virgin Islands by knockout in the eighth round.
