Josef Toman

Josef Toman (born April 6, 1899 in Prague ; † January 27, 1977 there ) was a Czech writer.

Toman attended the commercial academy in Prague until 1918. From 1923 to 1945 he worked for the publishing house of the Association of Visual Artists "Mánes", initially as a secretary, later as a director. During the Second World War the author was a member of the illegal committee of the intelligentsia . He has worked as a freelancer since 1953. His construction novel Where the foxes say goodnight, published in 1957, was the result of a long cohabitation with forest workers. Toman wrote this novel and the following works together with his wife Miroslava Tomanová . He traveled extensively through Europe, North Africa and Asia Minor in order to conduct environmental studies at the setting of his novels.
