Giorgio Mariani (born April 6, 1946 in Sassuolo ; † December 8, 2011 there ) was an Italian football player .
Life
Mariani, who was born in Sassuolo in 1946 and played in the storm, began his career as a professional footballer at FC Modena in the 1965/66 season . He then played for a short time for Cosenza Calcio in 1914 and for Ascoli Calcio before moving to Fiorentina . With the Fiorentina he was in the season 1968/69 under Bruno Pesaola Italian champion , although he was used as a substitute only once.
In the 1972/73 season Mariani saved his club Hellas Verona in the decisive direct relegation game against Sampdoria Genoa by scoring three goals to 3-1 after an initial deficit. He was best known abroad as a striker for Inter Milan , where he complemented himself well with Roberto Boninsegna . Between 1973 and 1974 he scored eight goals in 39 games for Inter over a year and a half. In the 1976/77 UEFA Cup , Mariani was eliminated with AC Cesena in the first round against 1. FC Magdeburg 3-1 and 3-1, scoring the first goal for Cesena in the second leg.
In total, Giorgio Mariani scored 29 goals in 158 games in Serie A. In Serie B he scored twice in 29 games. Most recently he served his hometown club US Sassuolo Calcio as sports director for some time .
Giorgio Mariani died after a long illness on December 8th 2011 at the age of 65 in Sassuolo.
