August Ernst Karl Konrad Clemm , since 1893 Knight von Clemm , (born December 8, 1837 in Gießen , † October 28, 1910 in Haardt ) was a German entrepreneur and politician.

Life

After studying chemistry , Clemm joined the aniline factory Sonntag, Engelhorn & Clemm founded by his brother Carl Clemm and Friedrich Engelhorn in Mannheim in 1862 . In 1865 he founded BASF with his brother Engelhorn, Seligmann Ladenburg , Leopold Ladenburg , Friedrich Reiß and others and took over the management of aniline production in Ludwigshafen . After he became Engelhorn's representative in 1869, he left BASF in 1882 in an argument with his brother. After Carl Clemm's departure, he returned to the Supervisory Board in 1885 , which he headed from 1897 to 1903.

From 1872 to 1898 Clemm was President of the Palatinate Commercial and Commercial Bank and in 1886 he was a co-founder of the Palatinate Hypothekenbank Ludwigshafen. In addition, Clemm was President of the Board of Directors of the Palatinate Railways until nationalization . From 1877 to 1898 he was chairman of the Palatinate Chamber of Commerce and Industry .

politics

From 1883 to 1899 Clemm was a member of the Bavarian Chamber of Deputies for the National Liberals . In 1893 he became its vice-president and from 1897 to 1899 he was its president.

Honors

In 1892 the city of Ludwigshafen am Rhein granted Clemm honorary citizenship . In 1893 he received the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown from Prince Regent Luitpold . Associated with this was the elevation to the personal nobility and he was allowed to call himself Ritter von Clemm after his entry in the nobility register . Clemm was also a lifelong Imperial Councilor of the Crown of Bavaria .
