John Pepper Clark

John Pepper Clark , also JP Clark or JP Clark-Bekederemo (born April 6, 1935 in Kiagbodo , Nigeria ; † October 13, 2020 ), was a Nigerian writer. He was a poet , playwright and essayist .

Life

After graduating from college, John Pepper Clark studied English at the University of Ibadan , where he founded the student magazine The Horn . After completing his studies, he worked from 1960 to 1962 as a journalist for the Daily Express in Lagos . He gained three years of experience at Princeton University in the USA, which he reported critically in his book America, Their America (1964). He then taught English and drama at a school in Ibadan until he moved to Lagos University as a professor of English literature in 1966. From 1968 to 1972 he was also co-editor of the major magazine Black Orpheus. From 1980 he directed the PEC Repertory Theater in Lagos.
