Ulrich Barnickel (born April 6, 1955 in Weimar ) is a German sculptor .

Life

Barnickel was born in Weimar. First he completed an apprenticeship as a blacksmith . Barnickel's artistic path began at the Burg Giebichenstein art college near Halle , where he studied metal sculpting with Irmtraud Ohme from 1978 to 1984 . In 1984 he was expatriated by the GDR authorities .

Ulrich Barnickel is one of the most independent metal sculptors in Germany. His work is characterized by large figures made of pipes, rods and flat elements through forging, welding and other processing techniques, the bodies of which consist of a crumpled metal skin. The sculptor is fascinated by open forms. They allow a look into the positive and negative form of a sculpture and break up the rigid monolithic effect of three-dimensional images. Often it is mythological figures that the artist places in a general human context.

So far, he has created 91 works in public spaces worldwide (as of 2018). His works can be found in Paris, New York, Istanbul and Havana, for example. He is represented at national and international exhibitions. Barnickel's sculptures are in numerous collections. It is primarily the material metal from which the sculptor forms his figurative abstractions.

2007 Barnickel with a thesis on the "metalheads at the castle - from applied art to metal steel sculpture" at the Bauhaus University Weimar to Dr. phil. PhD.

Ulrich Barnickel has lived in Schlitz in Hesse since 1987 and in his native city of Weimar since 2015 .
