Rolf Urs Ringger (born April 6, 1935 in Zurich as Rolf Richard Albert Ringger ; † June 26, 2019 ) was a Swiss composer and publicist .

Life

Rolf Urs Ringger already studied music during his seminar in Küsnacht ZH . So he took u. a. from 1954 to 1956 private lessons in counterpoint with Hermann Haller . He then began his actual music studies at the Zurich Conservatory .

In the summer of 1956 he attended the Darmstadt Summer Course for New Music with Theodor W. Adorno and Ernst Krenek . In the autumn of the same year he traveled to Naples and took six months of composition lessons from Hans Werner Henze .

Between 1958 and 1962 he took conducting lessons in his hometown. He studied musicology and philosophy at the University of Zurich and received his doctorate in 1964 with a dissertation on the piano songs by Anton Webern . In 1961 his first work was premiered by the Camerata Zurich under the direction of Räto Tschupp : 4 songs on Chinese texts for soprano and chamber orchestra. 1967/1968 he stayed in Berlin as a guest of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). From the mid-1950s he stayed regularly in Italy (especially on Capri ) and in the Engadin .

From the 1960s, Ringger wrote reviews of concerts, records and CDs as well as portraits of Swiss and foreign composers for newspapers such as the Neue Zürcher Zeitung , the Tages-Anzeiger and the Weltwoche .

From 1974 he wrote more than a hundred compositions for piano, voice, chamber music, orchestra, but also three ballets, The Narcissus (1980), Ikarus (1991) and Ippòlito (1995). His works have been performed all over the world, including a. in London, Manchester, New York, Frankfurt am Main, Munich, Berlin or Tokyo.

Rolf Urs Ringger died on June 26, 2019 at the age of 84 and was buried on July 4 in the Sihlfeld cemetery.
