Arthur Kampf (from 1912 Arthur von Kampf; born September 28, 1864 in Aachen , † February 8, 1950 in Castrop-Rauxel ) was a German history painter and university professor .

Arthur Kampf, son of the Aachen painter and imperial court photographer August Kampf and Maria (1837–1890), née Westendorp, studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy since 1879 , mainly with Peter Janssen the Elder . After completing his training, he became an assistant teacher in 1887 and professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 1893. He was a full member of the Düsseldorf Freemason Lodge to the three allies and honorary member of the Freemason Lodge Truth and Loyalty in Neuwied . In 1888 he created the monumental painting Laying out the corpse of Kaiser Wilhelm I. In 1898 Kampf went to Berlin, where in 1901 he became a full member of the Royal Academy of Arts , which he headed from 1907 to 1912 as president. In the meantime, Kampf also played a decisive role in the color design of the overall space of the so-called "Magdeburg Hall" in the Magdeburg Cultural History Museum , which was intended to accommodate the medieval exhibits on the history of the city of Magdeburg, as well as the ceilings, the adjoining ancillary rooms and the chapel of the house . In 1902 he received a large gold medal at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition .

In 1912 Kampf was awarded the Württemberg staff nobility. From 1915 to 1925 he was director of the University of Fine Arts in Berlin (today Berlin University of the Arts ) and was accepted as a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts . In 1922 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Berlin .

After the takeover of the Nazis , he joined the Nazi party in. At the Great German Art Exhibition in 1939 in the House of German Art in Munich , he was represented with various works, including The Struggle of Light against Darkness , a loan from the Reich Chancellery . In 1939 he received the eagle shield of the German Empire with the inscription: THE GERMAN PAINTER .

In 1944, in the final phase of World War II , Kampf was personally included by Hitler as one of only four painters on the special list of the so-called God-gifted list. After the Second World War he gradually fell into oblivion, also because a large part of his works were destroyed during the war or have been lost.

Arthur Kampf had been married to Mathilde (1869–1950), the youngest sister of the painter Willy Spatz , since 1889 . His sister Lydia Spatz had been married to the painter and temporary art professor in Aachen Alexander Frenz since 1887 . Eugen Kampf (1861–1933), his brother, was also a painter and professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy.

Artistic work

Kampf was a history painter whose pictures depict historical subjects and war scenes. His pictures were used in the propaganda of both world wars. The Nazi regime in particular celebrated Kampf as a painter. He was one of the commissioned artists privileged by the system, whose work is also known as blood-and-soil art .
