Wilhelm August Leopold Christian Krause (born February 27, 1803 in Dessau , † January 8, 1864 in Berlin ) was a German landscape and marine painter .

Life

Krause received lessons from Carl Wilhelm Kolbe the Elder in Dessau, who recognized his talent and ensured that he received a ducal scholarship in 1821 to attend the academy in Dresden . He stayed in Dresden for three years while trying in vain to be accepted as a pupil by Caspar David Friedrich . In 1824 he went to Berlin , found employment with the decoration and diorama painter Karl Wilhelm Gropius and in 1827 became a pupil of the painter Karl Wilhelm Wach . At the same time, Krause worked as a tenor singer at the Königsstädtisches Theater for almost five years . He was able to earn a living mainly from the money he earned there. In 1830 he left the stage to live entirely from painting.

Krause had specialized in maritime motifs, but nature was always in the foreground. He was inspired by his study trips to the sea: in 1830 he traveled with his friend Rudolf Jordan to Rügen , 1830 to 1831 to Norway , 1834 to Holland and 1836 to Normandy . In 1835 he exhibited in Düsseldorf . In 1842 he traveled to England and Scotland .

The Academy of Sciences in Berlin accepted Wilhelm Krause as a full member in 1833, after having regularly sent their exhibitions since 1826. In 1846 he published a book The painter technique of the masters of the 15th to 18th centuries rediscovered by Prof. Wilhelm Krause in Berlin .

Krause later went on study trips to the Mediterranean coasts of France , Italy and Greece . The subject of marine painting had introduced Krause first in Berlin and gathered over time a small circle of like-minded around, including Hermann Eschke , Eduard Hildebrandt , Charles Hoguet and Fritz Bamberger .

The maritime subjects were received with great applause by the audience and also brought them financial success.

The painter Wilhelm Krause died on January 8, 1864 in Berlin at the age of 60.
